hi
i am new to the list but already have several things on my mind
1. the following are my additions to rc.isconf
#!/bin/bash
#
# /etc/init.d/isconf
#
# chkconfig: 345 80 20
# description: isconf daemon
# processname: isconf
#
the lines are harmless in themselves but will now work with chkconfig -add
isconf
345 means isconf will now work at init 3 , 4 & 5 and 80 20 means it will be
given S80 and K20. this line is for redhat based distros that use chkconfig=
.
2. the following is an email to steve that he asked to be sent to the
mailing list:
my name is mohammed arafa and i am about to begin to administration of a
minimum of 6 rhel servers. i have never done this before and the max i have
done was administer my own mandrake pc and maybe help a redhat derived
friend.
so i began to research on ways to make my own life easier while maintaining
integrity, security and health of the systems.
i came up with http://www.infrastructures.org (THANKS!) and came up with th=
e
following list:
i need something that is open source/free that can:
install OS (and/or 3rd party programs like oracle) automatically
install without media (network based)
pull update/upgrade automatically or with minimal sysadmin intervention
monitor changes that i made to the system
monitor the health of my systems in a central console
monitor the integrity of my systems
rollback changes
alert me via visual, audio, mail and pager when something goes wrong
at installation ask/remind me to setup the necessary services like
ntp/dns/ldap/etc
have its own update system
easy configuration system
the list was short:
http://www.cfengine.org
http://www.isconf.org
http://www.cacti.net
http://www.nagios.org
http://www.zabbix.com
http://clusterssh.sf.net
but not complete nor does it meet all the specs i require (or so my reading
has led me to believe)
i have to honestly say i have not tried any of them but
i would also like to add that
in1frastructures.org<http://in1frastructures.org/>opened my eyes to
other services that are needed (THANKS AGAIN!) like ntp.
and i like explanations you gave and so am quite willing to try isconf4.
however, i cant find any documentation on the sites that relate to
installation, configuration, deployment of isconf4.
your ideas of turning any server into a baseline server at any point in tim=
e
is amazing but i was wondering how then do u carry out change management?
assuming i destroy ntpd.conf how do i change it back? since u have gotten
rid of the gold server?
what happened to system images? or does the latest isconf create images fro=
m
your test machine on the fly?
also i have an unfair question, what are the advantages/disadvantages of
isconf in regards to cfengine? is there something better out there?
and why did u move from sf.net <http://sf.net/>? it has a feature which i
(and i presume others) heavily use that is not available on your site; the
monitor package feature. furthermore, having it on sf.net
<http://sf.net/>allows a lot of ppl to find it easily via the search
function
and the isconf.org <http://isconf.org/> site does not have a table of
contents, it does have a search function but it only returns results for th=
e
trac or the wiki. since i dont know what i m looking for, it is therefore
not helpful.
do u and the isconf team have any plans to integrate other tools like nagio=
s
or cacti into isconf? what about security baselining? tripwire/samhain/etc?
i realise i m asking for help and at the same time criticising but hopefull=
y
u will take it as feedback and contructive criticism.
thank you
mohammed arafa
